WARZONE: RESSURECTION – Alakhai The Cunning

Alakhai dear Alakhai…. This was the last piece in the demo set, so I came to this figure with a while lot of anticipation and also a while lot of worry. This was more or less the the centerpiece for me and was the “big” figure.

I had a look at the sculpt when I opened the box and was wondering how I wanted to paint the figure. Slowly, piece by piece the set was getting done and slowly Alakhai was left in plastic grey, the last unpainted figure.

The old sculpt was terrible but this new one is fantastic.

I liked the old scheme but a large black clock and a large also black shoulder piece on top of that was going to be a test of doing black painting without it looking like it was complete.

The figure was given a Army Painter Skeleton Bone primer and a directional Army Painter Matt White spray. Once prepared, I started painting.

Razide previously has a red skin tone and now Alakhai blue. I did the skin first. This includes painting over the arm brace. Once I get to the brace it should look proper, well that was the plan. I used AP Crystal Blue and gave it a Blue Tone Wash. Once that was done…. The black.

The cloak was done with a matt black and I used Uniform Grey to give it a bit of texture. Dark Tone wash darkened the cloak to which I built it up again with a mixture of black and grey. I have the cloak a white front lining so it looks a bit like a member of the clergy

The shoulder pad had a red lining and I honestly didn’t like it. So after the matt black cover I gave it a Dark Wash and like the edges with grey.

To disrupt the monotony of black, I gave the pants a lighter off white and the shin armor with grey.

This was simple paint job. Very much table top quality.

This took 3 hours to finish.

WARZONE: RESSURECTION – Necromutant Leader

My Necro legionnaires need a leader and this figure was one of the last things i wanted to paint. Honestly. This felt like such an undertaking but somehow the figure left the shelf and ended up on the painting table. I was going to be painting alone today so a little discipline is needed.

legionnaire-leader-01

Here’s the problem a lot of people I talk to have:

When they get down to painting an army/warband/force, sometimes there is that one figure that is a little bit more detail and a little more complicated to paint. So what we do is we move it to the back of the painting line and hope by some miracle it gets painted. This figure becomes that one figure unpainted in the whole army and “I’ll paint it when I get better” is the most common defense.

It won’t get painted.

The best way to approach a project like this is to not think and just do it.

I went for a DESERT YELLOW primer which upon retrospect,I may have fared better with UNIFORM GREY. No particular reason, but the thought crossed my mind more than once during the painting.

legionnaire-leader-04

Initially, I did the skin with MOLDY SKIN from Reaper and the shoulder pad and armor with Reaper’s Deep Ocean. But that DID NOT LOOK GOOD. However, i tried to work around it by working the rest of the figure first. So, the loin cloth got some red (AP DRAGON and PURE), some VALLEJO FLAT BROWN for the boots and gloves.

legionnaire-leader-03

I took a step back, gave the figure another look and realized. The colors need to change. Nothing wrong with the colors but they felt rather weak on the figure.

legionnaire-leader-02

The armor had coat of UNIFORM GREY and I did the shades with BLUE TONE. I am quite liking the ARMY PAINTER tones, and I am getting use to using them.

The skin needed a bit more “color”, so BARBARIAN FLESH and some FLESH WASH took center stage.

This figure was done in 2 hours.

Here it is.

Castle Tower Ruins – The Base

A while back (or at least that’s what it feels like at the moment) I started working on a terrain/scenery piece. I  thought i’d get it done on the very same day until I realized I had lost the one piece of basing I wanted for the piece. I looked EVERYWHERE!

…as Brandon will tell you…. everything stopped as I looked frantically for it.

I didn’t find it. The paint project was done.

Yesterday, as I was looking for my Motorhead Bad Magic CD, I found this under a pile of comics on the floor. THE MISSING BASE PIECE!

ruins-base-01

There was going to be no substitute after I saw what the final piece would look like in my minds eye. So this was a joy find.

I used PVA to stick the ruins on the CD and started tarting up my ruins.

The pebbles was something left here by some fella who wanted to do a huge terrian project but in the end left me with a ton of basing material. (These are all mine now, thank you. Three years is long enough to keep it for you.)

The lil bushs are ARMY PAINTER’s POISON IVY as is the Static Grass.

I honestly must do more of these……

Guild Ball : Mortician’s Guild – Cosset

I wanted to finish the Morticians Graves model and realized that I want to standardize the basing. I tend to do all my basings in one go, so this only meant one thing. Finish the Guildball starter.

cosset-01

Cosset is a very nice figure, I like the pose and it looks pretty intricate. However, I did not like the face/ head part. The forehead was sculpted slightly large and it was struggle to get the face done right, as I was getting prime color ready for a kabuki paint job

cosset-04

I also changed the hair color to purple because while testing, it looked great to frame her face. I also changed her dress to a grey white color so as to give a very team like feel and so the figure will gel with Graves. The straps were also changed to brown for consistency. The sash was given a purple tinge so as to give the figure color but not dominate the figure itself.14895481_10154681194774993_1901672055_o

Castle Tower Ruins

I have had this piece in the store now for years. I am not sure who passed me a bag of dental plaster casts but it seems to have been here almost forever.

In fact, this was not the first time i decided to paint it. I think a few years ago, I did a black primer on it and crappy lazy brown job for the chest.

14672902_10154641153309993_306639575_o

And this is how it stayed for a long long while….

Tonight tho….. it was time to do something with it.

I gave the piece a spray of Army Painter’s Uniform Grey as a base. On the back, I decided to apply a dusting of Army Painter’s Skeleton Bone.

14697070_10154641153389993_1452072876_o

I wanted to give the outside a different feel from the inside of the ruins piece

Army Painter’s Uniform Grey and some white was used to high light.

14689872_10154641153144993_1695281899_o

The chest used Vallejo’s Saddle Brown and all three of the Army Painter’s Silver paints. This was washed with Vallejo’s smoke. I also did a slight brown wash on all the recesses inside. On the outside i used pigment to stain parts i felt would drip or hold water.

Its at this point when as per usual the project stopped as I spent a few hours looking for a installer CD that was just the right size for this ruin.

I did not find it.

Well….. in a few years then 🙂

Privateer Press Iron Kingdoms Hugo Lubanov

The plan for today’s Painting Mondays was to sort the latest shipment. We received our allocation of Infinity’s Red Veil and Warlord Games’ Konflikt 47, so I planned to get the shop sorted. This was the general plan. Also, with everyone not being in at 8pm, I pretty much decided on not painting.

However, arriving almost 40 mins later, our esteemed “Best Painter” arrived and with that, all hopes of sorting the shop, gone. (If you’re a regular you’d know almost anything will side track the “sorting of the shop”)

Having not planned to paint, I had to now decide on what I should be painting. My options were

  1. Mantic’s Elves – These elves for Kings of War have always been something I wanted to paint. I always wondered why nobody seemed to paint them nice enough to play. I have also been talking about this one for quite a while
  2. Infinity’s Demo Set – I need to get these painted up. There was no love for Infinity today however.
  3. I was thinking to do a Battletech figure, the guys at the shop will be doing a Classic Battletech game in the coming months and I figured, I want in. Which one tho….
  4. Maybe something from Spartan Games…..

I finally decided to pull out a Privateer Press Iron Kingdom’s figure.
Hugo Lobanov – Khadoran Arcane Mechanik

This range was part of the first Privateer Press push to introduce their line to world of miniatures. These minis did quite well at the shop for the figure collector and we sold quite a few. However, some were left on the shelf for the past decade or so.

This was tonight’s project. Project start 9:34pm.

The mini was given a primer of AP Skeleton Bone and then a directional spray of AP Matt White Spray. This helps.
